This movie is the earliest coming-of-age movie I’ve seen, and its humor and humanity still feel true to life. Supposedly, this is the first movie to depict openly lesbian characters. It’s kind of Matilda — stern headmistress and a teacher that’s several people’s gay awakening.
- The cast of girls is so good! They have such authentic chemistry.
- The editing is so fast-paced!
- The thing that makes the movie feel older is when the Princess visits, and the kids all bow in deference.
- Excellent lighting — dramatic, but not in an expressionist way
- The close-ups of Hertha Thiele have Joan of Arc vibes. And that first kiss! So iconic.
This one really snuck up on me! What a delight
